Varvakios Agora — Athens at Its Most Alive
The Athens Central Market (Varvakios Agora), operating since 1886 on Athinas Street, is one of Europe's greatest food markets: a covered hall of fish merchants where the catch arrives directly from Piraeus each morning, an adjacent meat hall that would stun any Parisian boucher, and a street of spice vendors selling saffron from Kozani — the world's finest — alongside dried figs from Kalamata and olive oil from Kalamata and Crete.
The FFGR Chef-Guided Market Experience
Our private chef guide meets you at the market at 7am — peak freshness, peak energy. Two hours of guided exploration: the fish hall, the meat hall, the spice street, the herb vendors. Your chef selects ingredients for a private cooking class that follows — either at your hotel suite kitchen or at a cooking atelier in Kolonaki.
The Cooking Class
Three recipes based entirely on the morning's market finds. The class lasts approximately 90 minutes and culminates in a lunch that you have cooked yourself, served with Greek wine selected by our sommelier.
