The island of Delos (3.4 square kilometres, permanently inhabited population: zero) was, in the 5th century BC, the most important religious sanctuary in the Greek world and a major commercial hub whose trading houses connected Egypt to Asia Minor. Today it is an open-air museum of extraordinary density — the Terrace of the Lions, the House of the Dolphins, the Theatre of Delos — visited by a handful of daily boat trips from Mykonos.
